The Data Analytics for Petroleum Industry Certificate is coordinated by the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science (TAMIDS). The certificate is interdisciplinary and is housed in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering within the Texas A&M University College of Engineering to train undergraduate students at Texas A&M University to become more competitive in the job market of the petroleum industry.

Students will receive an education in concepts, computation and case-based learning to prepare them for data analytics and machine learning careers.

The certificate will provide opportunities for students to work on technical problems with global consequences in the energy industry. Certificate holders are viewed as students who are committed to working hard to further their education and to better prepare themselves for integrated data science and analytics roles in the petroleum industry.

Suitable Majors

This certificate is suitable for students majoring in geology, geophysics, petroleum engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, statistics and business.

Admission Requirements

  • Students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above to be admitted to the certificate program.
  • Students must submit a request to be registered for electives (email the person listed below).
  • Students must obtain degree clearance from their major’s undergraduate director for any elective course exceptions.
  • Students must have a letter grade of B or better in each course used for the certificate to complete the certificate program successfully.

Financial Assistance

The ConocoPhillips Data Science Scholars program provides scholarships to students in this certificate program. The scholarships are awarded competitively and might make the student eligible for an in-state tuition rate for the remainder of the year.

Any applications to this certificate program will be considered for the ConocoPhillips Data Science Scholars program, provided that the following conditions apply to the applicant:

  • Cumulative GPA 3.5 or higher
  • Completion of PETE 201 with grade B or higher
  • Completion of at least one certificate program elective with grade B or higher
