The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECEN) does not require leveling courses for Master of Science (MS) thesis and doctoral (PhD) students, including both on-campus and distance programs.
Our department also does not require leveling courses for MS non-thesis students – this also includes both on-campus and distance programs – UNLESS the student gets on probation (falls below a 3.0 grade point average [GPA]). In this situation, the student on probation will be required to select three courses from this list for the following probationary semester:
- ECEN 214 - Electrical Circuit Theory (4 credit hours [CR])
- ECEN 248 - Introduction to Digital Systems Design (4 CR)
- ECEN 314 - Signals and Systems (3 CR)
- ECEN 322 - Electric and Magnetic Fields (3 CR)
- ECEN 325 - Electronics (4 CR)
- Electronics: 326, 457, 474
- Power: 438, 441, 459, 460, 467
- Electrophysics, Electro-optics, or Microwaves: 370, 451, 453, 462, 464, 465, 466, 472, 473
- Communications, Control, or Signal Processing: 420, 444, 445, 446, 447, 455
- Computer Engineering: 350, 449, 454, 468, 469, 475
If the student's GPA stays below a 3.0 by the end of their probationary semester, they will be dismissed.
If the student’s GPA is corrected to a 3.0 or higher by the end of their probationary semester, they do not have to continue with leveling courses.
