The Department of Materials Science and Engineering will achieve recognition as a regional and global leader in materials science and engineering education, innovation and impact-driven research.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is to educate global leaders in materials science and engineering; perform research to address materials challenges of the 21st century; impact society, industry, national security, and the environment and attract the best minds and develop them into the leaders of tomorrow.

Program Educational Objectives

The educational objectives are to produce graduates who, within a few years of graduation:

  1. Are actively engaged in materials engineering practice and acquire new knowledge and skills, or pursue graduate studies at nationally and internationally recognized graduate and professional schools. 
  2. Apply their knowledge and skills to solve problems and contribute to the discovery, innovation, and commercialization as skilled practitioners in the materials engineering profession.
  3. Communicate effectively, and demonstrate adaptive, inclusive, and collaborative leadership in a diverse workplace.
  4. Perform ethically and professionally in the service of Texas, the nation, and the world.

Student Outcomes

Undergraduate students graduating from the Materials Science and Engineering B.S. program will attain the following:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
