In addition to the Texas A&M University Student Rules regarding scholastic deficiency and probation, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSEN) requires the following of its students:

All MSEN students are required to maintain a satisfactory grade point average (GPA) and Academic Degree Completion Progress.

Maintaining Satisfactory GPA:

  • Students who fall below a 3.0 GPA will placed on Academic Probation.
  • 3.0 GPA Requirement: Overall, Term/Semester, and Degree Plan:
    • If students fall below a 3.0, they will have two (2) full semesters (Fall/Spring or Spring/Fall) to rectify or be dismissed.  
  • Students who earn individual term/semester GPAs at or below 2.0 twice will be dismissed from the MSEN department.

Maintaining Satisfactory Degree Completion Progress: 

  • Satisfactory degree completion progress will be determined by factors such as average time to completion, earning a "U" in research and seminar courses, the achievement of specifically required milestones per degree, and annual performance evaluation.
  • Annual Performance Evaluation Overall Score is 50 or less; you’ll be placed on probation for a full year until your next review. If there are no improvements, you may be subject to dismissal.
    • Finding a faculty advisor
    • Qualifying Exams (Ph.D. only)
    • Establishing a committee
    • Degree Plan Submission
    • Research Proposal (Ph.D. and M.S. Thesis only)
    • Preliminary Exam (Ph.D. only)
    • Final Exam “Oral Defense” (Ph.D. and M.S. Thesis only)
    • Dissertation/Thesis submission “clearing” (Ph.D. and M.S. Thesis only)
