Engineering Honors (EH) students in the biomedical engineering (BMEN) department must satisfy the academic and participation requirements for this track.
We have also included a list of features available to EH-BMEN students and some curriculum notes.
Academic Requirements
Students must earn at least 18 hours of honors credits (undergraduate honors courses with HNR prefix or graduate courses) in courses offered by the Colleges of Engineering or Arts and Sciences.*
*Any math or science course offered by the College of Arts and Sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or statistics) can be used to fulfill EH requirements, as long as it is approved as part of the student's degree plan.
The hours must consist of the following:
- At least 12 hours must be engineering credit hours (including honors ENGR courses plus honors courses from all departments or majors)
- 9 credit hours must come from BMEN honors courses
- No more than 6 hours of graduate courses registered for undergraduate credit
- Between 4-6 hours of research (BMEN 491H)**
- Students must complete the BMEN Undergraduate Research Seminar during their first year in EH-BMEN
- ENGR 181H - 1 credit hour EH seminar course

**Students can use no more than 6 hours of research toward the total 18 hours.
Graduation requirements:
- Complete a thesis with the Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) Program
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Earn a GPA of 3.25 or higher in honors courses
- Receive no honor code violations
Participation Requirements
- Honors Required Meeting: Meet with a BMEN honors committee member (view members on this BMEN honors committee webpage) during each academic year
- Activity: Participate in at least one EH activity each regular semester (view the EH calendar webpage for a list of upcoming events)
- Annual Survey: Complete the EH Survey (sent out via email) in May of each year
Features of this Track
- Special Honors faculty advisors: Each EH scholar in BMEN should pursue research in a tenure track research faculty's laboratory during the second year based on their research and career interests.
- Tutoring program: Selected EH scholars in BMEN will be offered the opportunity to work as undergraduate tutors for required undergraduate courses and be compensated per hour as student workers.
Curriculum Notes
The BMEN department will offer a list of regularly taught honors courses.
- Honors Undergraduate Research (BMEN 291/491) and Independent Study (BMEN 285/485) require prior approval of the BMEN Engineering Honors Coordinator.
- Senior design courses (BMEN 453/454) are not allowed as Engineering Honors credits.
- If taken in addition to senior design courses, AggiE Challenge credits (ENGR 491) can be considered as Engineering Honors credits upon approval by the AggiE Challenge Mentor and the Engineering Honors Track Coordinator.
- Any 600-level BMEN course can be used for honors credit except for BMEN 684, BMEN 685, and BMEN 691.
- A maximum of 1 hour of BMEN 681 can be considered as Engineering Honors credit.
