The uncompromising vision of the department is to establish a world-class ocean engineering program that is a pioneer in modern curriculum, an innovator of education techniques, and a leader in key established, emerging research and technology areas.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University is to conduct research, serve the public and educate students in a broad program encompassing traditional and emerging areas of ocean engineering. The department aims to prepare graduates entering engineering practice, continuing onto graduate study, lifelong learning, and professional development; and serve the public and engineering profession in Texas and the nation through participation of faculty and students in public and professional activities. The objectives of the department are to contribute to a better understanding of ocean engineering through applied and fundamental research and support the education and development of students.
Program Educational Objectives
The undergraduate ocean engineering program within the Department of Ocean Engineering at Texas A&M University will produce graduates who will:
- Work in ocean engineering and related engineering fields with private and government organizations.
- Advance to positions of increased responsibility, develop professionally through training, technical conferences, and continuing education activities, and adapt to emerging technologies and issues.
- Become professional engineers and members of ocean engineering related professional societies.
- Pursue graduate studies in ocean engineering and related fields and receive post-baccalaureate degrees.
Student Outcomes
Students graduating from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in ocean engineering will have:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design and produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors.
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
