The Master of Science in Safety Engineering (MS SENG) is administered by the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University. The objective of this program is to teach the principles and practices of safety engineering for leadership careers in industry.
The industry is in a state of unprecedented growth, wherein technology advancements are ever changing and even the most recent graduates need continued education training and knowledge in order to succeed.
The prerequisite for the MS SENG program is a bachelor's in engineering.
The MS SENG requires a minimum of 32 credit hours of approved coursework and research. Of those hours, 16 credit hours are required for core coursework while the remaining 16 credit hours consist of a combination of research, directed studies, and electives. All credit requirements can be fulfilled via both in-person learning or online (distance) education.
The university computes GPR (Grade Point Ratio) on a four-point scale for each applicant. Generally, a minimum GPR of 3.0 is required to be considered for admission into the graduate program. While there is no minimum GRE score required, the scores are competitive based on the pool of applicants.
The university requires all international graduate students whose native language is not English to fulfill an English proficiency requirement. Verification of English proficiency can be achieved by a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, 79-80 internet-based or GRE Verbal score of 146. Those graduate applicants not verified must take the English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) prior to registering for courses in their first semester. The ELPE evaluates English skills in the area of grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, written composition, and oral communication. The English Language Institute (ELI) administers the ELPE as well as offering English courses in these areas.
The safety engineering program considers various factors when making the graduate admission decisions, such as quality of institutions previously attended, content of past academic work, work experience in safety domain, letters of recommendation, applicant’s statement of purpose, and writing samples.
The following documents are required to complete the application:
Fall semester admission – March 15
Spring semester admission – Oct. 1

A one- to two-page essay on why you would like to pursue a graduate degree in safety engineering at Texas A&M. It is also helpful to include an area of interest, relevant experience, and plans for your graduate research.
GRE is not required for MS SENG program. However, any GRE score reported appropriately will be considered during admission process. You will need to accurately report your general GRE scores in the Academic History section of this application. If admitted, you will need to have your test scores sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to EngineeringCAS (use code 4119) BEFORE you can begin classes at Texas A&M. Test scores should be from a test date within five years of the date of the application.
Note: Students who have had their official GRE test scores sent to the Texas A&M Office of Admissions prior to submitting their application through EngineeringCAS will not be required to send the scores again to EngineeringCAS. However, please know that your application will remain in the “received” category and not be moved to the “complete” category in the EngineeringCAS system. Departments can still make admission decisions on “received” applications.
International applicants are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS test scores. Tests should be taken at least eight weeks prior to the appropriate application deadline to ensure a timely receipt and processing of results. We will use your highest test score from one test date. Copies of test scores are not considered official, but uploading them to your application helps the university/department in reviewing your application for admission sooner.
TOEFL official test scores must be sent directly from the testing center to EngineeringCAS (use code B887) to be considered official.
IELTS official test scores must be reported electronically from the testing center to Texas A&M’s Office of Admissions. To report your electronic IELTS, find this exact address in the test center database:

Applicants are exempt from this requirement if they have a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution or are citizens of the countries listed at this link.
You must request three (3) recommendations/evaluations before you are able to submit your application.
Recommendation/evaluation letters are not required to be received at the time of the application in order for you to be allowed to submit your application. You can track the progress of your recommendation letter requests in EngCAS. You can also email your recommenders a reminder through EngCAS, or choose to send a request to another recommender.
When requesting recommendation/evaluation letters, please be sure to include the following information in the comment section:
Core coursework requirement (16 credit hours)
Other requirements (16 credit hours)
