College-Level Graduate Admissions

Department Specific Information

Admission into our petroleum engineering graduate program is based on many factors. Here is a preparation checklist.

1. Documents needed

Our department requires:

  • A one-page statement of purpose on the following areas:
    • Your academic and professional preparation
    • Your research area of interest
    • Your post-graduate plans
  • Your résumé or curriculum vitae (to support your application)
  • Three letters of recommendation submitted through EngineeringCAS

You must submit your GRE scores if you do not hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution.

Things to know:

  • A complete application must be submitted (fee paid) to be reviewed by the committee
  • All admitted on-campus students are considered for departmental funding offers
  • Admissions for on-campus study are made in the fall and spring semesters only, online admissions are made every semester
  • Applications will not be reviewed or acted upon until after the deadline for each semester has passed

2. Deadlines

Our department deadlines are listed below.

  • Fall semester: apply by Dec. 15 of the previous year (or by Dec. 1 if you are a U.S. resident or permanent resident seeking a Texas A&M fellowship for attending on campus)
  • Summer semester (online learning students only): apply by Nov. 1 of the previous year
  • Spring semester: apply by Sept. 1 of the previous year

Things to know:

  • Complete ALL your application materials by the stated deadline
  • The deadlines apply to ALL students seeking funding
  • We encourage you to submit your documents to the admissions office four weeks before our deadlines to allow for processing time
  • Most admissions are made in the fall

3. Application

Apply online at EngineeringCAS (select Texas A&M University).

Things to know:

  • Your completed application must be on file before we can answer any questions about it
  • Our graduate application committee makes admission recommendations
  • The committee normally meets two to three weeks after the application deadline to review applications

4. Waiting

Have patience, the committee will not review applications until after the published deadline for each semester

Things to know:

  • We do not pre-evaluate - you must submit a completed application to Texas A&M University
  • We encourage you to ask our graduate program staff questions, but please limit any faculty questions to introductions or technical interest discussions only.

5. Funding

Funding decisions are separate from application decisions, all admitted on-campus applicants are circulated to the faculty for possible funding offers.

Things to know:

  • All admitted on-campus students are considered for funding offers
  • Your admission letter will contain funding information
  • Online degrees do not qualify for department funding
