Turning Business Challenges Into Practical Solutions
In the Industrial Distribution (ID) capstone experience, seniors apply their engineering and business knowledge to a real-world problem identified by an industry partner. Working in teams over two semesters, students research the challenge, analyze data and develop recommendations that address their sponsor’s needs.
Connecting Engineering and Business
The capstone process brings together what students have learned through coursework, internships and student involvement. Projects explore areas such as logistics, operations and sales, with teams considering how a proposed solution could affect other parts of the business. Through the two-course sequence, IDIS 443 and IDIS 444, students use systematic research methods and a systems-thinking approach to develop solutions. The experience strengthens their analytical, project management, communication, teamwork and leadership skills as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Working with Industry Partners
Sponsors provide a defined challenge and serve as hands-on mentors throughout the project. Faculty guide students as they investigate the problem, evaluate possible approaches and develop recommendations. This collaboration gives students experience in responding to business needs while providing partners with a fresh perspective on an operational challenge.
Capstone Showcase
Each project is presented to industry guests and judges at the Industrial Distribution Capstone Showcase, highlighting the results of two semesters of research, analysis and teamwork.
