Welcome to The J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University!

Howdy! The J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, with its main campus in College Station, Texas, and a branch campus in Doha, Qatar, has a strong local, national, and international reputation as a premier undergraduate and graduate research institution. In recent years, our department has advanced its reputation with a strong competitive graduate program and a superb undergraduate program. In collaboration with the College of Engineering and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), we continue to strengthen our position as a major center of excellence where scientific research is conducted, and where technological advances and breakthroughs are realized.

Historically, much of the department’s fine reputation is founded on its undergraduate program. It is recognized for its solid background in mechanical engineering fundamentals, and for having instilled a strong work ethic, as well as a ‘can-do attitude’ among its graduates. The abiding appreciation of former students from the mechanical engineering program fuels much of the generous support we receive. We maintain a continually updated, strong undergraduate mechanical engineering program to better serve today’s students.

The department’s doctoral program is critical to our mission. Currently, more than 250 students are enrolled in the program, which produces highly trained mechanical engineers for placement as professors and researchers at competitive universities; in industries nationally and internationally; and as researchers in national laboratories. The J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering continues to enhance its offering of cutting-edge technology graduate courses. This helps ensure that our doctoral students are prepared to make significant contributions in emerging technologies such as alternative forms of energy production, storage and distribution, and interdisciplinary large-scale societal problems as they relate to human health and the environment. We also have a large M.S. program with more than 240 students who are an integral part of the research enterprise of the department. These students are trained at major research centers and laboratories such as the Turbomachinery Laboratory, Energy Systems Laboratory, Center of Innovation in Mechanics for Design and Manufacturing, Center for Autonomous Vehicles and Sensor Systems, INVENT Lab and Starlab.

I am excited to see what the future holds for our department and invite you to join us on our incredible journey.
