Undergraduate Opportunities
There is no need for additional paperwork for departmental scholarships; our students can apply for assistance through Texas A&M University scholarships and financial aid. Students can also review College of Engineering scholarship information for other opportunities.

Awards and Scholarships
The numerous awards and scholarships available in our department are generously donated by our former students and companies.
Needs-based Scholarship
The needs-based scholarship, Turbomachinery Symposium Founders Committee Scholarship, helps a mechanical engineering student in good standing cope with exceptional, unforeseen financial circumstances. The student is only eligible to receive this support once, and the scholarship can only be applied to tuition expenses.
Rescinded Scholarships
Students whose department scholarship has been rescinded during the academic year due to not meeting scholarship criteria or requirements have the right to appeal. The student must provide a petition letter to the department scholarship committee about extenuating circumstances that may have hindered their scholarship eligibility. The committee reviews appeals on a case-by-case basis.
Graduate Opportunities
Our department offers graduate students numerous opportunities for funding through assistantships and fellowships. If you have questions about the information below, reach out to our graduate advising office.
Assistantships
Master’s thesis and doctoral students in our department are eligible for two types of graduate assistant positions – research and teaching. Both positions provide students with a monthly salary, health insurance, and tuition and fee payment for the minimum full-time hour enrollment for each semester of employment.
Graduate Assistant – Research (GAR) appointments require a student to work on specific research projects under the supervision of faculty members. These positions are awarded directly to the students by the faculty. If you are interested in pursuing a GAR position, reach out to faculty whose research aligns with your interests to see what opportunities may be available in their labs.
Our department has a limited number of Graduate Assistant – Teaching (GAT) positions available each semester. GATs assist faculty in managing an assigned course through various tasks, including grading, holding office hours, leading lab sections, or other course-related duties. Incoming students are considered for GAT positions at the time of admission review. Continuing students are required to submit an application distributed by the mechanical engineering graduate office.
Fellowships
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, our department awards over $350,000 in fellowship funds to approximately 175 students each year. These department fellowships provide students with direct funds to assist with living and other expenses. Additionally, these competitive fellowships provide non-resident (out-of-state) students with a non-resident tuition waiver, allowing them to pay tuition at the resident (in-state) rate.
Texas A&M University also awards fellowships. Find out more using the link below:
