Pathway 1: Technology, Strategy and Operations

*Effective for all incoming students who entered summer 2026 and after

Courses:

30 hours beyond B.S.

  • 15 hrs – BMEN courses
    • May not use any hours of BMEN 685
  • 12 hrs – Electives
    • May use up to 3 hours of BMEN 685
    • May use BMEN or non-BMEN courses
  • 2 hrs – BMEN 676 (Professional Development for Biomedical Engineering), fall only
  • 1 hr – BMEN 684 (Professional Internship and Immersion Experience), typically summer terms

Pathway 2: Medical Device Design Engineering

*Effective for all incoming students who entered summer 2026 and after

Courses:

31 hours beyond B.S.

  • 12 hrs – BMEN courses
    • May not use any hours of BMEN 685
  • 12 hrs – Electives
    • May use up to 3 hours of BMEN 685
    • May use BMEN or non-BMEN courses
  • 2 hrs – BMEN 676 (Professional Development for Biomedical Engineering), fall only
  • 4 hrs - BMEN 643 (Risk-Based Development and Testing of Medical Devices), fall only
  • 1 hr – BMEN 684 (Professional Internship and Immersion Experience), typically summer terms

Additional Degree Plan Information

  • May use up to 6 hours of upper-level undergraduate coursework (300 or 400 level) on degree plan with approval of chair/committee.
  • Upper-level courses must come from a major that is outside of the student’s previous undergraduate (or master’s) level major.
  • Undergraduate coursework required for leveling may not be applied to a graduate degree plan.
